Trivia and anecdotes

The actual fuel tank is housed under the seat, while the upper tank acts as the cover for the intake airbox.

Information note

This page draws on numerous road tests and industry reviews, which I have compared, analysed and reworked. The opinions and data reflect my own view and are shared for general information.

Overall rating
8/10
Strengths

Engine: the Revolution Max 975T delivers a ready response and good flexibility for everyday use, while keeping a more modern character than traditional Harley-Davidson V-twins.

Handling: the Nightster RH975 is relatively compact and manageable, qualities that make it suitable for both city riding and mixed routes.

Ergonomics: the riding position is compact and lets you make good use of the bike when manoeuvring and in traffic.

Technology: a modern engine platform, liquid cooling and contemporary electronics provide a more up-to-date technical base than the previous generation of Sportster.

Weaknesses

Limited wind protection: on open roads and motorways the standard configuration leaves the rider exposed to the wind; Harley-Davidson offers dedicated windscreens for this reason.

Two-up touring: to ride regularly with a pillion you may need a dedicated seat, pillion seat and footpeg kit, at extra cost.

Cost of genuine accessories: personalising the bike with Harley-Davidson components can have a significant impact on the final budget.

First production run: on MY2022 RH975s you need to check the VIN to see whether any recall campaigns and technical work have been carried out.

Who it is recommended for

It suits riders looking for a modern-style Harley-Davidson with relatively compact dimensions and a lively engine, usable every day and on open roads. It is particularly well suited to those who like the idea of personalising the bike, gradually choosing accessories for comfort, pillion riding and touring.

Who it is not recommended for

It is less suited to riders who mainly expect long motorway journeys, want plenty of wind protection as standard, or often ride two-up without wanting to invest in a dedicated seat, footpegs and other accessories.

Buying advice

On a used bike, start by checking the VIN and whether any recalls are still open, particularly on 2022 Nightster RH975s. Then check the service documentation, the condition of the battery, cold starting, the absence of faults or warning lights, correct operation of the electronics, and the condition of the tyres, brakes and final drive. A modified bike should also be checked for the quality and compliance of the accessories fitted.

Known issues

Some Harley-Davidson RH975 Nightster model year 2022 bikes were subject to NHTSA recall 22V-745 / Harley-Davidson 0179 concerning the handlebar: on certain bikes built between 24 August 2021 and 18 August 2022 the weld could be faulty and lead to the handlebar sections separating. The remedy is to replace the handlebar. The check must be made against the individual VIN and does not mean that every 2022 Nightster is affected.

A 2023 Harley-Davidson technical service bulletin for the Revolution Max platform also lists diagnostic areas to check on some 2021-2023 vehicles in the event of starting problems or fault codes, including battery condition and engine earth. These are diagnostic guidelines, not a list of chronic Nightster faults.

Maintenance

Maintenance should follow the intervals in the Harley-Davidson manual. H-D technical documentation gives scheduled intervals for Sportster models starting at 1,600 km (about 1,000 miles) and then at 8,000 km, 16,000 km, 24,000 km, 32,000 km (about 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 miles) and so on. During servicing Harley-Davidson also recommends checking for recalls, product programmes and the availability of the latest software calibration. On a used bike it is therefore important that the work is documented and consistent with the mileage and age of the motorcycle.

Spare parts availability

Genuine parts availability is backed by the Harley-Davidson dealer network and the official catalogue for the RH975 platform. For Nightster-specific accessories, genuine components are available with stated compatibility for the RH975 from 2022 onwards. For wear items and aftermarket components availability is generally wider, but compatibility with your RH975 version and model year needs to be checked.

Used market value
approx. €10,000–€12,400 (Italian listings, September 2026)
Value for money

On the used market observed in September 2026, standard 2022-2024 RH975s were being offered at roughly €10,000-€12,400, with significant differences depending on year, mileage, condition, warranty and accessories. Value for money can be attractive, especially for properly maintained bikes with a verifiable history; however, the asking price should be compared with new bikes available at the dealership.

Final review

The Harley-Davidson Nightster RH975 is a modern Sportster that combines Harley-Davidson styling with the Revolution Max 975T platform. Its strengths are relatively easy handling, a responsive engine and the ability to configure it to your own use. When buying used, it is particularly important to separate the characteristics of the model from any work required on the individual bike: for 2022 models the recall status should be checked via the VIN, while for every model year it is worth checking the documented maintenance and the accessory configuration. With these checks, the Nightster can be a versatile base for urban and mixed riding and for medium-distance trips.
