BMW R 12: The Classic Cruiser with a Boxer Soul

BMW · 2024-present · 1170 cc

BMW R 12 boxer engine
Description

Features and technical evolution

The BMW R 12 is a modern classic that combines the character of the BMW boxer twin with a contemporary chassis and a Classic Cruiser layout. The teardrop-shaped steel tank, low seat, wide handlebars and 19- and 16-inch wheels create lines deliberately inspired by BMW tradition.

Unveiled in 2023 and introduced as a 2024 model, the R 12 sits alongside the R 12 nineT in BMW Motorrad's Heritage range. Its philosophy is that of a relaxed, customisable bike, but one equipped with modern technology such as ride-by-wire, DTC and BMW Motorrad Integral ABS Pro.

Engine and technical features

The engine is the air/oil-cooled 1,170 cc boxer twin, with two overhead camshafts and four radially arranged valves per cylinder. Maximum power is 95 bhp at 6,500 rpm, while torque reaches 110 Nm (81 lb ft) at 6,000 rpm.

The transmission uses a six-speed gearbox and BMW's characteristic shaft final drive. The stated top speed is 203 km/h (126 mph).

Design and chassis

The tubular steel frame is a new spaceframe structure with a bolted-on rear subframe. At the front is a 45 mm USD fork, while at the rear an aluminium single-sided swingarm with Paralever system does the work.

Front braking is handled by two 310 mm floating discs with radially mounted four-piston monobloc calipers. At the rear is a 265 mm disc with a two-piston floating caliper. ABS Pro and dynamic traction control complete the electronics package.

The R 12 as a modern classic

The BMW R 12 does not try to replicate a historic motorcycle. Instead it uses elements of BMW tradition, such as the boxer, the shaft drive and the tank inspired by the BMW /5, setting them in a bike designed to modern criteria.

The 754 mm seat height, the 227 kg kerb weight and the relaxed riding position make it consistent with the Cruiser philosophy. The strong predisposition to customisation also makes it easy to change its aesthetic character through dedicated accessories and components.

Historical context

The BMW R 12 was born in 2023, the year of BMW Motorrad's centenary celebrations, as a new interpretation of the Heritage philosophy inaugurated by the R nineT in 2013. BMW pairs the R 12 nineT, a Classic Roadster, with the R 12, a Classic Cruiser.

The project carries forward a formula that combines classic design, modern technology and scope for customisation. The nod to tradition is particularly evident in the steel tank inspired by the so-called Toaster Tanks of the 1970s BMW /5 and in the decision to keep the boxer and shaft drive as central elements of BMW's technical identity.

Main versions

The BMW R 12 was introduced as the Classic Cruiser of the new R 12 family. The R 12 nineT uses the same general engine base but represents a different interpretation of the project, with a Classic Roadster layout and 109 bhp.

For the R 12, BMW Motorrad has provided different equipment and accessory configurations, including Option 719 solutions, tubeless wire wheels, dedicated comfort packs and components for cosmetic customisation. These elements need to be distinguished from the base mechanical version because many belong to the optional equipment or original accessories.

Trivia and anecdotes

  • The R 12 name has a history: BMW had already used this designation in the 1930s for one of its own boxer-engined motorcycles.
  • The tank recalls the BMW /5: the teardrop shape picks up the language of the so-called Toaster Tanks of the 1970s.
  • The R 12 was born together with the R 12 nineT: the two bikes interpret the same Heritage philosophy in different ways, as a Cruiser and a Roadster respectively.
  • Customisation is part of the design: the frame and the configuration of the rear section were conceived to encourage the use of dedicated components and accessories.

What to check before buying one

The BMW R 12 is a modern classic built around a very precise idea: keep the fundamental traits of a traditional BMW recognisable without giving up contemporary technology.

The 1,170 cc boxer, the shaft drive, the classic tank and the round instruments sit alongside ride-by-wire, DTC, ABS Pro and LED lighting. It is precisely this balance that defines the bike's character.

For anyone looking for a modern Cruiser who doesn't want to give up BMW mechanics and identity, the R 12 is a coherent proposition. It is not a historic bike and does not try to look like one: it is a modern BMW that uses the marque's memory as an integral part of its design.
